A tripled population, foundations poured on the same clay
Westfield's population roughly tripled between the 2000 and 2010 census counts, and nearly all of that new construction, much of it around the 400-acre Grand Park Sports Campus, was poured on the same Crosby-Brookston silt loam and silty clay loam soils, developed on calcareous glacial till, that underlie the entire Carmel area.

The smaller number of homes tracing to Westfield's 1834 Quaker founding and 1848 incorporation have had far longer exposure to Indiana's freeze-thaw cycles and expansive-clay pressure than the subdivisions built during the 2000s growth boom, which shows up as more advanced settlement or cracking in the older foundations.
